The true cost of self hosting n8n is roughly $28 to $30 a month in cash for a 4 GB server with backups and a domain, plus the value of the hours you spend keeping it running. This guide breaks down the true cost of self hosting n8n line by line. That is less than most paid automation tools, but it is not zero, and it is not always cheaper than n8n Cloud.
At up to 2,500 executions a month, n8n Cloud Starter (about $22) costs less than the server alone. At 10,000 executions, Cloud Pro (about $56) costs roughly $26 more than self-hosting, a saving that disappears if upkeep takes more than about 40 minutes a month at a $40 hourly value.
This guide breaks the true cost of self hosting n8n into its parts, step by step: the licence, the server, DigitalOcean and Hetzner prices, backups, your time and the break-even point against n8n Cloud. It includes a calculator you can set to your own numbers and a section for agency owners.
A note on what changed. This guide replaces an earlier version that used a single flat $10 server price. Cloud server prices moved a lot in 2026, so every price below is dated and sourced, euro prices are shown in euros, and I convert at about $1.12 per euro, the rate I used in my Zapier vs Make vs n8n cost comparison. These are list prices from vendor pages, not invoices from a running instance, and the time figures are my estimates, not measurements.
What I Tested vs What I Researched
Tested: I did not run an n8n instance for this article. The calculator arithmetic and the worked examples were checked by hand, but no server was provisioned.
Researched: n8n licence and plan documentation, cloud provider price pages and third-party price trackers, as listed under Sources, with prices as of 18 October 2026 and euros converted at about $1.12 per euro.
Not tested: Upkeep time is my estimate, valued at $40 an hour, not a measurement from a running instance.
The True Cost of Self Hosting n8n: The Short Answer
All rows assume a domain at $1 a month and provider backups at 20% of the server price. The last three columns add maintenance time valued at $40 an hour.
| Setup | Server | Backups (20%) | Domain | Cash a month | Plus 0.5 h | Plus 2 h | Plus 4 h |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean 2 GB (bare minimum) | $12.00 | $2.40 | $1.00 | $15.40 | $35.40 | $95.40 | $175.40 |
| DigitalOcean 4 GB | $24.00 | $4.80 | $1.00 | $29.80 | $49.80 | $109.80 | $189.80 |
| Hetzner CPX22 4 GB (€19.99) | $22.39 | $4.48 | $1.00 | $27.87 | $47.87 | $107.87 | $187.87 |
| DigitalOcean 8 GB | $48.00 | $9.60 | $1.00 | $58.60 | $78.60 | $138.60 | $218.60 |
For comparison, n8n Cloud Starter is €20 a month (about $22.40) and Pro is €50 (about $56.00), both billed annually.

Two things stand out in the true cost of self hosting n8n. First, the cash difference between providers is small: Hetzner’s 4 GB server is about 7% cheaper than DigitalOcean’s, which is nothing like the gap it was a year ago. Second, your time dominates. Two hours a month at $40 is $80, nearly three times the server bill. That is the point most guides skip, and it is why the true cost of self hosting n8n depends more on you than on your hosting provider.

List prices checked 18 October 2026. Cloud plans are billed annually in euros. Time figures are your own estimates.
How the true cost of self hosting n8n is calculated here: cash cost is the server price plus backups plus the domain. Your time is maintenance hours times your hourly value, plus any one-off setup hours spread over twelve months. The Cloud figure picks the n8n plan that covers your execution count and converts it from euros. The result line shows how many minutes of upkeep a month you can afford before self-hosting stops saving money. If you do not value your own time, set the rate to zero and you will see the cash comparison only.
Step 1: Is n8n Free for Commercial Use?
The self-hosted Community Edition runs under the Sustainable Use License, which n8n’s documentation says is free and applies to the self-hosted version only. n8n Cloud is a paid subscription with its own terms. The key phrase is internal business purpose. If workflows are only created or modified by you or people in your organisation, you can use n8n under the Community licence for free.
| Use case | Under the Community licence |
|---|---|
| Automating your own business with n8n | Allowed |
| Building automations for clients on your instance, when clients cannot create or edit them | Allowed |
| Charging clients for setup, workflow creation, maintenance and training | Allowed |
| Using n8n behind the scenes in your own product, where users trigger automations you built | Allowed |
| Running several instances of the Community Edition | Allowed |
| Hosting n8n as a service and letting clients build workflows | Not allowed |
| Letting end users build or configure workflows through your product, by UI, API, MCP or an AI agent | Not allowed |
| Forking n8n to launch your own automation product, or white-labelling it | Not allowed |
| Using enterprise features that ask for a licence key | Only with an Enterprise licence |
On licensing, the true cost of self hosting n8n depends on how you use it. So, is n8n free for commercial use? Yes for most small businesses and agencies, with the line drawn at who controls the workflow logic, not whose credentials are used or how many clients you serve. n8n’s own test is whether n8n is the thing being sold or a tool that supports something else being sold.
There is no limit on the number of clients you can serve from a single instance, and you can charge consulting and development fees. This is general information, not legal advice. If your use case is not clearly covered, n8n directs licensing questions to license@n8n.io.
Step 2: n8n Self Hosting Server Requirements
n8n’s documentation says memory requirements usually supersede CPU requirements, and recommends giving every instance a dedicated database. It also recommends self-hosting for expert users, and Cloud for anyone not experienced at managing servers. Beyond that, n8n does not publish one universal spec, so the figures below come from hosting providers and are labelled as such.
The commonly cited minimum for n8n self hosting server requirements is 1 vCPU, 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of SSD storage. For production, Hostinger’s n8n guide recommends 2 to 4 vCPUs, 4 to 8 GB of RAM and 40 to 80 GB of NVMe storage. The reason 2 GB is too tight in practice is the memory the supporting services use. One hosting provider’s breakdown for a Docker setup with PostgreSQL:
| Component | Typical memory |
|---|---|
| PostgreSQL 16 | 500 MB to 1 GB |
| n8n main process and workers | About 500 MB |
| Docker engine | About 200 MB |
| Caddy reverse proxy | About 50 MB |
| Operating system and services | 500 MB to 1 GB |
| Total at steady state | 1.75 to 2.75 GB |
That leaves little headroom on 2 GB, and workflows that process large JSON payloads can add another 500 MB to 1 GB temporarily. A 4 GB server is the realistic floor for a production setup. n8n uses SQLite by default, which is fine for a simple single instance, while PostgreSQL is the production choice and queue mode needs PostgreSQL and Redis.
| Tier | Typical use | Spec | Example servers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Test | Learning, a handful of simple workflows | 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM | DigitalOcean $12 |
| Production start | Webhooks, CRM syncs, AI workflows | 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB disk | DigitalOcean $24; Hetzner CPX22 €19.99 (about $22.39) |
| Heavier use | Many webhooks, large payloads, queue mode | 4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM | DigitalOcean $48; Hetzner CPX32 €35.99 (about $40.31) |
One point in self-hosting’s favour: the Community Edition has no execution quota. Your ceiling is the server’s RAM, not a count of runs.
Step 3: Server Prices in the True Cost of Self Hosting n8n, DigitalOcean vs Hetzner
| Server | Spec | Monthly price | Backups |
|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic | 1 vCPU, 2 GiB, 50 GiB SSD | $12 | 20% weekly or 30% daily |
| DigitalOcean Basic | 2 vCPU, 4 GiB, 80 GiB SSD | $24 | 20% weekly or 30% daily |
| DigitalOcean Basic | 4 vCPU, 8 GiB | $48 | 20% weekly or 30% daily |
| Hetzner CPX22 | 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 80 GB NVMe | €19.99 including IPv4 (about $22.39) | 20% of the price, daily, 7 slots |
| Hetzner CPX32 | 4 vCPU, 8 GB, 160 GB NVMe | €35.99 (about $40.31) | 20% of the price |
| Hetzner CX23, when orderable | 2 vCPU, 4 GB, 40 GB | €5.99 including IPv4 (about $6.71) | 20%; listed unavailable on 7 October |
DigitalOcean’s prices are stable and easy to read. A $12 Droplet has 1 vCPU and 2 GiB, the $24 Droplet has 2 vCPUs and 4 GiB, and extra outbound transfer is $0.01 per GiB.
Hetzner needs a warning, because it has moved the true cost of self hosting n8n more than any other provider this year. It raised cloud prices on 1 April 2026 and again on 15 June. The Regular Performance CPX22, the closest 4 GB match, went from €7.99 to about €19.49 excluding IPv4, a rise of roughly 144%, and costs €19.99 with IPv4.
The cheaper Cost-Optimized line, where a 4 GB CX23 costs €5.99 with IPv4, was marked unavailable on 7 October according to one price tracker. When I read Hetzner’s Regular Performance page on 18 October, it showed the plans as currently unavailable to order. The practical lesson: Hetzner’s old advantage of a 4 GB server for around $5 is gone for now, and any plan you price today may not be orderable tomorrow.
Other budget providers exist. One tracker lists OVHcloud’s VPS-1 (2 vCores, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB NVMe) at €4.49 a month. I have not priced it beyond that listing, so compare data location, support, IPv4 charges and backup terms before choosing.
Step 4: Backups and the True Cost of Self Hosting n8n
Backups are the cost most self-hosting guides skip, and the one you notice only after you needed one. By default n8n stores data in SQLite; a production setup uses PostgreSQL, and a lost database means losing every workflow, credential and execution log.
| Option | Cost | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean weekly backups | 20% of the Droplet price ($4.80 on a $24 Droplet) | Four backups kept; lives in the same account as the server |
| DigitalOcean daily backups | 30% of the Droplet price ($7.20 on a $24 Droplet) | Better recovery point; costs half as much again |
| Hetzner automatic backups | 20% of the server price excluding IPv4 (about €3.90 on a CPX22) | Daily, seven slots, deleted if you delete the server |
| Off-site copy to Backblaze B2 | $6.95 per TB a month, first 10 GB free | A small database dump costs cents; you write the script |
Back up three things: the PostgreSQL database, your n8n encryption key, and your Docker Compose and environment files. The encryption key matters because without it, restored credentials cannot be decrypted. Provider backups are convenient but live in the same account as the server, so a copy to separate object storage is worth the few cents. Then test a restore at least once a quarter, because an untested backup is a guess.
Step 5: Your Time Is Most of the True Cost of Self Hosting n8n
This is the part of the true cost of self hosting n8n that never appears on an invoice. Here is where the hours go. These are my estimates for someone comfortable with Linux and Docker.
| Task | How often | Estimated time |
|---|---|---|
| Install Docker, HTTPS, PostgreSQL and a firewall | Once | 3 to 6 hours |
| Update n8n and test key workflows | Monthly | 15 to 30 minutes |
| Check for failed executions | Weekly | About 10 minutes each |
| Test a backup restore | Quarterly | 30 to 60 minutes |
| Fix an incident: full disk, crashed container, expired certificate | Occasional | 1 to 2 hours each |
Add the recurring items and a well-run instance needs roughly an hour to an hour and a half a month, more if you check failed executions weekly and less if you rely on alerts and automatic updates. That is why the examples use three profiles: 0.5 hours for an experienced operator with alerts and automated updates, 2 hours as a typical figure, and 4 hours for someone still learning Docker. At $40 an hour those are $20, $80 and $160 a month. The first build adds a one-off 3 to 6 hours.
If your time is worth less, or you enjoy this work, the number shrinks. If downtime costs you customers, it grows, because self-hosted means you are the on-call engineer.
n8n Cloud vs Self Hosted Pricing: Where the Break-Even Sits
n8n Cloud bills per workflow execution, not per step, so a 20-node workflow that runs once counts as one execution. Plans are billed annually in euros: Starter €20 for 2,500 executions, Pro €50 for 10,000, and a Business licence at €667 for 40,000 that is self-hosted only. Here is how n8n cloud vs self hosted pricing compares at three volumes, using a 4 GB server at $27.87 to $29.80 in cash.
| Executions a month | n8n Cloud plan | Cloud cost | Self-hosted cash (4 GB) | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2,500 | Starter (€20) | $22.40 | $27.87 to $29.80 | Cloud is cheaper before your time is counted |
| 10,000 | Pro (€50) | $56.00 | $27.87 to $29.80 | Self-hosting saves $26 to $28 in cash; worth it only if upkeep stays under about 40 minutes at $40 an hour |
| 10,001 to 40,000 | No Cloud plan. Business (€667, about $747) is self-hosted only | n/a | About $58.60 on an 8 GB server | Community Edition is far cheaper if you do not need Business features and your workloads fit the server |
The break-even for the true cost of self hosting n8n is simple. At 10,000 executions, Cloud Pro costs $56.00 against $29.80 for a DigitalOcean 4 GB setup, a gap of $26.20. At $40 an hour that buys 39 minutes of upkeep. Against Hetzner’s $27.87 the gap is $28.13, or about 42 minutes. If your instance needs more than that, Cloud is cheaper overall, and it comes with no on-call duty.
Below about 2,500 executions Cloud is cheaper even in cash. Above 10,000 there is no Cloud plan at all, so the choice becomes the free Community Edition on your own server against a Business licence plus a server, and the Community Edition wins on price by a wide margin, as long as you do not need Business features such as SSO.
The True Cost of Self Hosting n8n for Agencies
For agency owners, the true cost of self hosting n8n includes the licence rules, and they are favourable. n8n’s documentation allows you to build automations for clients on a single instance you operate, charge consulting, development and maintenance fees, and serve as many clients as you like, provided clients do not have access to the n8n interface or workflow logic. You can also install and manage n8n on a client’s own server, as long as you are not hosting it for them as well. n8n notes that a partner programme for managing multiple client instances is in development.
The true cost of self hosting n8n works in an agency’s favour at modest scale. Suppose ten clients each run 800 executions a month, which is 8,000 in total. Cloud Pro at $56.00 is $5.60 per client. A DigitalOcean 4 GB server at $29.80 is $2.98 per client in cash, or $10.98 per client once two hours of upkeep are valued at $40 an hour. Self-hosting only comes out ahead if you cover the time through a retainer or maintenance fee, which many agencies do.
The risks scale too. One shared instance means one broken workflow or memory spike affects every client, and you hold their credentials in one place, so backups, updates and access control are your responsibility. Running a separate small instance per client is allowed under the licence and limits the blast radius, but ten $12 servers cost $120 before backups.
Hidden Costs in the True Cost of Self Hosting n8n
Security patching. An unpatched, internet-facing automation server that holds API keys is a target. Updates are your job. Renewal prices can also jump after the first term, as the line-by-line cost of running a WordPress website shows. Neglected software is a risk on any stack. For a WordPress example, see Inactive WordPress Plugin Vulnerability.
Downtime. On Cloud, an outage is n8n’s problem. Self-hosted, a crashed container at 11 p.m. is yours. Add uptime monitoring and alerts.
Execution data growth. Stored execution history grows over time and can fill a small disk, so set pruning rules.
Scaling later. When concurrency grows you will need queue mode, which adds Redis and worker processes and more RAM.
Learning cost. If Docker, reverse proxies and PostgreSQL are new to you, the first months cost more than the steady-state figure.
Should You Self Host n8n or Use Cloud?
Put the true cost of self hosting n8n next to your execution count and the answer is usually clear.
- Choose Cloud if you run under about 2,500 executions a month, do not manage Linux servers, or cannot afford downtime. It is cheaper in cash and cheaper in time.
- Choose self-hosting if you run above 10,000 executions, need data to stay on a server you control, need to reach internal systems, or already operate infrastructure and can keep upkeep under the break-even minutes above.
- In between, at 2,500 to 10,000 executions, the decision is your time. Run the calculator with your honest hours.
If you are still comparing tools, my guide to choosing an AI automation tool covers the wider decision, and Make.com vs n8n prices the two at 5K, 25K and 100K operations.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the true cost of self hosting n8n per month?
About $28 to $30 in cash for a 4 GB server with backups and a domain, using list prices checked on 18 October 2026. Add your time: roughly $20, $80 or $160 a month at $40 an hour for half an hour, two hours or four hours of upkeep.
Is n8n free for commercial use?
Yes, for internal business use and for consulting and automation services where clients do not access your n8n instance, under the Sustainable Use License. You cannot host n8n as a service for clients to build workflows, white-label it, or let end users configure workflows through your product. Check with license@n8n.io if your case is unclear.
What are the n8n self hosting server requirements?
The commonly cited minimum is 1 vCPU, 2 GB of RAM and 20 GB of SSD. For production, plan on 2 to 4 vCPUs, 4 to 8 GB of RAM and 40 to 80 GB of NVMe storage with PostgreSQL. n8n’s documentation says memory matters more than CPU.
Is n8n Cloud cheaper than self-hosting?
At up to 2,500 executions, yes: Starter at about $22.40 costs less than a 4 GB server. At 10,000 executions, Pro at about $56 costs roughly $26 more than self-hosting in cash, but self-hosting only stays cheaper if upkeep is under about 40 minutes a month at $40 an hour.
Is Hetzner or DigitalOcean cheaper for n8n?
On list prices, Hetzner’s CPX22 (€19.99, about $22.39) is about 7% cheaper than DigitalOcean’s $24 4 GB Droplet. Hetzner raised prices twice in 2026, and its plans showed as unavailable to order when I checked, so confirm availability before you plan around it.
Can an agency host n8n for its clients?
An agency can run n8n for clients as long as clients cannot create or edit workflows, and can charge consulting and maintenance fees. It cannot host n8n as a service where clients build workflows. Multi-instance management for agencies is a partner programme n8n says is in development.
Does the true cost of self hosting n8n include my time?
Yes, and it should. Server, backups and a domain come to about $28 to $30 a month, but two hours of upkeep at $40 an hour adds $80. Your own hours are the largest line in the true cost of self hosting n8n, so count them honestly.
How do I estimate the true cost of self hosting n8n for my team?
Enter your server, backup option, domain, upkeep hours, hourly value and monthly executions into the calculator above. It shows the self-hosted cash cost, the all-in cost with your time, the matching n8n Cloud plan and the break-even minutes of upkeep.
How much do n8n backups cost?
Provider backups cost 20% of the server price on Hetzner and DigitalOcean’s weekly option, or 30% for DigitalOcean daily. That is about $4.80 on a $24 server. An off-site copy to Backblaze B2 costs $6.95 per TB a month with the first 10 GB free, so a small database dump costs cents.
How often should I update a self-hosted n8n instance?
Check for new releases regularly and apply security fixes promptly. The upkeep time in this guide is my estimate, not a measurement, and skipping updates trades that time for security risk.
What should I back up on a self-hosted n8n server?
The database, the encryption key n8n uses for stored credentials, and your Docker Compose and environment files. Provider backups cost 20% of the server price on Hetzner and on the weekly DigitalOcean option, and an off-site copy to object storage adds a small amount on top.
Is Hetzner still cheaper than DigitalOcean for n8n?
On the list prices in this guide a Hetzner server costs slightly less than the DigitalOcean equivalent, but Hetzner plans were reported as unavailable to order on 18 October 2026. Check availability and current prices on both before you decide.
True Cost of Self Hosting: Final Thoughts
The true cost of self hosting n8n is a server bill of about $28 to $30, a domain, backups and, above all, your time. The server is the smallest part. Whether self-hosting beats Cloud comes down to two numbers: your monthly execution count and the minutes you will really spend on upkeep. Below 2,500 executions Cloud wins on both. Above 10,000 self-hosting wins on cash by a wide margin. In between, use the calculator, be honest about your hours, and treat the break-even minutes as the budget you are betting you can stay under.
