Agentic commerce is the umbrella term for AI agents that research, compare, and purchase products on a shopper’s behalf, instead of the shopper clicking through a website themselves. Since late 2025, OpenAI, Shopify, and Google have all shipped real features built around it — but the reality on the ground is messier, and more useful, than the early headlines suggested.
If you sell on Etsy or Shopify, here’s what has actually happened, what’s working right now, and what to do about it.
A Quick Timeline of Agentic Commerce

On September 29, 2025, OpenAI launched Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT, starting with Etsy sellers and built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP), an open standard co-developed with Stripe. By February 2026, it expanded to over a million Shopify merchants and added PayPal as a payment option, branded as “Buy it in ChatGPT.”
Then, in March 2026, OpenAI quietly scaled back the feature. According to reporting from The Information (and later confirmed in OpenAI’s own release notes), fewer than 30 of the promised million-plus Shopify merchants had actually gone live. The reason wasn’t technical failure — it was conversion. Purchases completed natively inside ChatGPT converted roughly three times worse than simply linking out to the merchant’s own website, even though ChatGPT was driving significantly more new-customer traffic than typical search referrals.
What’s Actually Working: Discover in AI, Buy on Site
Instead of native in-chat checkout, the model that’s actually gained traction by mid-2026 is simpler: AI agents help shoppers discover and compare products, then hand off to the seller’s own checkout to complete the purchase.
Shopify activated “Agentic Storefronts” by default for eligible merchants in March 2026, making products from millions of stores discoverable across ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, and the Gemini app — with checkout still happening on the merchant’s own site, so sellers keep ownership of their customer data. By its Spring 2026 update, Shopify removed the approval requirement entirely: any store can register for this through a self-serve process.
Google took a parallel approach, launching its own Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) alongside Shopify at NRF 2026 — an open standard that lets AI agents pull real-time pricing, inventory, and product details directly from a merchant’s catalog.
Why This Version of Agentic Commerce Actually Makes Sense for Small Sellers
The “discover in AI, buy on site” model solves the two things that made the original native-checkout version awkward for small sellers: you don’t lose your customer relationship to a third-party checkout, and you don’t have to build anything custom to participate if you’re already on Shopify or Etsy.
- Etsy sellers are already included automatically through Etsy’s existing Offsite Ads program — no application needed.
- Shopify sellers on an eligible plan are opted into Agentic Storefronts by default, and can register for deeper UCP support without needing approval.
- Sellers on other platforms should check whether their ecommerce platform has any UCP or Agentic Commerce Protocol support on its roadmap — this is quickly becoming table stakes rather than a nice-to-have.
The Fee Question
Where native in-chat checkout is used, OpenAI charges merchants a 4% transaction fee on completed purchases, on top of standard payment processing costs (around 2.9% via Stripe) — a combined take rate of roughly 9%, still notably lower than typical marketplace commission rates. Importantly, this fee structure applies specifically to the native Instant Checkout flow, not to the more common “discover, then buy on your own site” model, which uses your existing payment processing and doesn’t add a new AI-specific transaction fee.
3 Practical Steps to Take Now
- Audit your product data. AI agents rely on structured, accurate product attributes — pricing, availability, dimensions, materials. Shopify has reported that AI searches pulling from its structured Catalog convert roughly twice as well as those relying on scraped, unstructured page data (a vendor-reported figure, though directionally consistent with what makes sense: structured data is simply easier for an agent to trust and act on).
- Test your own visibility. Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, or Gemini to find products in your specific category and see whether your store shows up at all.
- Confirm your platform’s agentic commerce support. If you’re on Shopify, check whether Agentic Storefronts is active on your plan. If you’re elsewhere, ask your platform directly about Universal Commerce Protocol or Agentic Commerce Protocol support.
The Bottom Line
Agentic commerce didn’t arrive the way it was first pitched — full autonomous checkout inside a chat window turned out to convert worse than simply sending shoppers to your own site. But the version that did stick is genuinely good news for small sellers: AI agents are increasingly the discovery layer, your own store remains the checkout, and the main thing worth investing in right now is making sure your product data is accurate and structured enough for an agent to find and trust.
